Monday 18th May – Home Leanring

Good Morning Super Heroes. Are you ready for another week of training? I hope we catch Mr Stink this week. I can see lots of you have prepared brilliant traps. Some of you have been hunting for him and searching out his ‘Secret Evil Lair’. You are all so brave and clever. I am very lucky to have you on my team.

Start of the day –

What is the month of the year? Sing our month of the year song. Do jazz hands for this month.

What day was it yesterday? What day of the week is it today? What day will it be tomorrow? Sing our days of the week song. Do jazz hands for today.

What is the weather today?

It was the 17th day of the month yesterday. I wonder if you know what the date it is today. How do you know?

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Last week we looked at length and the words we use to describe length. We use short and long.

This week, we are going to learn about height. Can you explain what height is? It is how tall something stands. We describe buildings and people by height when we say how tall or short they are. We are going to use words such as tall and short to describe height. Do you know what the tallest building is in England? Where in England would I find it? Do you know what the tallest building in the world is? Do you know the name of the tallest mountain? Where would I find the tallest mountain? Today, I would like you to start by researching things that are tall and things that are short.

Ask the members in your family to stand around the room away from each other. Can you see who is the tallest and who is the shortest? Now ask them to stand in a line. Can you see who is the tallest person and who is the shortest person? Is it easier to compare when they are stood nearer to each other? Can you put your family in order of height? Start with the smallest and go to the tallest.

This week we are starting phase 4.

When children start Phase Four, they will know a grapheme for each of the 42 phonemes. They will be able to blend phonemes to read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and segment in order to spell them.

Children will also have begun reading straightforward two-syllable words and simple captions, as well as reading and spelling some tricky words.

In Phase 4, no new graphemes are introduced. The main aim of this phase is to consolidate the children’s knowledge and to help them learn to read and spell words which have adjacent consonants, such as trap, string and milk.

During Phase 4, the following tricky words (which can’t yet be decoded) are introduced:

  • said
  • have
  • like
  • so
  • do
  • some
  • come
  • were
  • there
  • little
  • one
  • when
  • out
  • what

The link below has phase 4 resources that you may wish to download and print. Alternatively, you could write the new tricky words on flash cards.

www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-4-resources.html

To start phonics this week, watch my video to teach you the new phase 4 tricky word song (link below) and learn the actions to match. You can use the link below to then join in.

English/ Communication and Language –

Ask a grown up to read these words to you. They describe villains and heroes. Can you explain what the words mean? Can you think of any other words to describe a hero or a villain? I would like you to use one of the words to describe a villain, and write your won interesting sentence to describe Mr Stink.

Watch the video call below once you have written the sentence –

Oh no! I need your help.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Superheroes use powerful wrist bands to release their super power. Why don’t you make some to add to your costume? You will need two pieces of paper that you roll, or two toilet paper tubes. Decorate the wrist bands to match your costume. Think about the colours and the superpowers you have.

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and ask a grown up to read you a story. Don’t forget to check our caterpillar page to see how they are changing and growing.

Start of the day –

What is the month of the year? Sing our month of the year song. Do jazz hands for this month.

What day was it yesterday? What day of the week is it today? What day will it be tomorrow? Sing our days of the week song. Do jazz hands for today.

What is the weather today?

It was the 14th day of the month yesterday. I wonder if you know what the date it is today. How do you know?

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Read and solve the problems below. Think about what we have learnt about length this week. Can you prove your answer?

Problem 1 – Jack has 8 chunks in his chocolate bar. May counts her chunks and notices that her chocolate bar is 6 chunks long. Beth counts her chocolate bar chunks and notices that she has 4. Who has the shortest chocolate bar? Who has the longest chocolate bar? Whose bar is longer than Beth’s?

CHALLENGE – How can Jack, May and Beth share their chocolate so that they each have the same? Prove your answer.

Problem 2 – The Very Hungry Healthy Caterpillar ate 5 apples and he grew 5 cubes long. He then add 4 oranges and he grew 4 more cubes long. How many cubes long is he? The Very Unhealthy Caterpillar was his friend. He ate 2 sweets. He was 3 cubes long. Then he ate 4 cupcakes and he was 4 more cubes long. He then doubled his length when he ate 1 ice cream. What does double mean? How many cubes was The Very Unhealthy Caterpillar now? Which caterpillar was the longest? Which caterpillar was the shortest? How do you know? Can you prove it? Use bricks, Lego, cubes or stones to help you.

You may wish to use a number line too.

Show and Tell – ‘N’

Remember to share a video or photograph to show me your ‘Show and Tell’. You could dress up in your superhero costumes and share all your exciting adventures this week.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

You have worked so hard to save the world from Mr Stink. You deserve some relaxing time. Tonight. Have a relaxing warm bath with bubbles. You could even ask a grownup to light a candle and put it high up to keep it safe and out of reach, but so the flickering light makes you feel calm. I like to listen to music in the bath. You could play some relaxing music outside the door so the player does not go near water, but so that you can hear it. I have found some face masks below that you could make with ingredients from your house. You put them on your face to help you relax and to make your skin nice and healthy. You can even add cucumbers to your eyes. The cold cucumber feels nice on your eyelids.

Grown-ups have relaxing baths all the time. I bet you would enjoy it just as much. It is so important to look after yourself and have times to relax. Your mind is just as important as your body. You need to keep both healthy. Do things to make you happy and relaxed. Well done for all your hard work this week.

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a lovely weekend. Thank you for helping me. Hopefully, we will catch Mr Stink very soon. Keep looking for him.

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Length is used to measure distance. Today, can you make a ramp? You could use some wood, a table, a slide, some drain pipe, anything that will create a slant. Next, use either a ball or cars. Can you push the ball or car down the ramp from the top? Which one travelled the shortest distance? Which one travelled the longest distance? Can you measure the length from the bottom of the ramp to where the ball or car stopped? Estimate (that means guess) how many hands each item has travelled. Then measure. Was your estimation good? Use words such as short, shorter, shortest, long, longer and longest to describe the length of distance the car or ball travelled.

Morning Play and Learn

We need to write secret Superhero messages to each other. Let’s have a practice. To do this, you need paint, paper and a crayon. Write a tricky word onto paper using a crayon. A white or pale colour works best. You will not be able to see the writing on the paper easily. Not mix some paint with some water, and brush over the word. The paint does not go onto the crayon. You should be able to see the writing clearly now. This is how we can write to each other without our enemy knowing. If I receive a piece of paper that looks blank, I will paint over the top and see your hidden message.

Today, you are going to revise phase 3 tricky words.

To be a Superhero, you need a healthy brain. To help keep your brain focused, you should play games such as memory games. To do this game, you will need some 10 items of your chose. You can use food, or toys, or other items in your house. Choose small items. Next put the items on the floor and cover them with a tea towel or cloth. You need a pencil and some paper. Ask someone to remove one item without you seeing. You then have 10 seconds to look at all the items on the tray. After the 10 seconds, your helper needs to cover over the items again. Can you use your phonics to sound out and write the item you believe is missing? Check. Were you right? Repeat the activity.

Some items that would be good to lay out would be a spoon, a plum, a sheep toy, some string, a fork, a chain, a night light, plain crisps, foam, book, cow toy, foil, hairbrush.

NOTE TO PARENTS – TRY TO USE ITEMS THAT ENCOURAGE THE CHILDREN TO WRITE OUR NEW SOUNDS FROM PHASE 3

J, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, ur

English/ Communication and Language –

Last week we celebrated VE day. Why did we celebrate VE day? Were there any heroes in war? What did they do to become heroes. How do you think people felt during war? You may wish to ask a grown up questions to help your understanding. Look back at the VE day PowerPoint from last Friday if you would like to understand VE day more.

Do we have any recognised heroes helping us during Coronvirus?

Mission – Your mission is to make a picture, and you could add a message, and give it to someone that is helping you during the lockdown. This could be an NHS worker, it could be the postal worker, the waste collector or a helpful neighbour. Remember to stay safe and deliver the picture from a distance. It will make them smile. Remember the story we read about filling each other’s buckets. I am sure this would make someone happy and fill their bucket. It is a kind thing to do, so I bet it fills your bucket too.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

You will need a corridor or thin room and some wool or string. Set the area up as shown in the picture below. Have fun.

Superhero, your mission for today has come in. There is a problem in the corridor. Laser beams are stopping access. You need to practice your balance and skill in moving in different ways. You need to get through the corridor without touching the lasers. If you touch the lasers, then the alarm will go off and Mr Stink will catch you. Stay Safe.

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess, hang up your Superhero costume for tomorrow and have a chill and a story with a grown. You are a fantastic Superhero. Thank you so much for all your help.

Morning Play and Learn

A very important mission has come in! I hope you have your costume on. Watch the video to find out your mission.

You will receive 5 text messages 10 minutes apart. The first message will be sent at 10am. Complete the sequence by finding out the missing number. Write the numbers down. Then put the numbers into order and send me a picture on Tapestry. I will then use your answer to open the safe. I can then turn off the device. Stay calm and professional and we will save the world together. We will not let Mr Stink win!!!!!!!

NOTE TO PARENTS – DO NOT OPEN THE NEXT VIDEO UNTIL THE CHILDREN HAVE RECEIVED ALL 4 TEXT MESSAGES AND HAVE COMPLETED THE CODE.

Today, we are going to revise all the sounds from phase 3. We have learnt all the sounds so before we start phase 4, we need to check we know all of phase 3.

Watch the video. We will go through all the sounds together and read some words.

Can you write all the sounds from phase 3 onto the ground? Next pick up a stone. Roll the stone. Say the sound to match the letter that the sound lands on. Can you recognise all the sounds straight away? Which ones do you need to spend more time learning?

J, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, ur

English/ Communication and Language –

You have thought about what a Superhero needs to do. Now can you think of another Superhero that you know? It does not need to be a character from a comic or a film, it could be someone like your Dad or Mum. My hero is my Grandad. He is always there to help me. He is very clever and very skilled. He used to help me with my homework when I was little, and now he does lots of fixing in my house. He always makes me feel special and I think he is the kindest person I know. His super power is to stay calm in any situation. Who is your hero, and why? Write a sentence and draw a picture to tell me all about your hero. Remember our 6 things, use your phonics, write the correct letter formation, capital letter at the start of the sentence, full stop at the end of the sentence, finger spaces and read the sentence back to yourself at the end.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Mr Stink is on the loose still. We need to catch him. Can you design a trap? Can you draw and label the trap so that I know how it works? You could even build the trap using the things you have at home? What will you use and how?

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and read a book with a grown up.

Tuesday 12th May – Home Schooling

Start of the day –

What is the month of the year? Sing our month of the year song. Do jazz hands for this month.

What day was it yesterday? What day of the week is it today? What day will it be tomorrow? Sing our days of the week song. Do jazz hands for today.

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

To start lay your hand down flat. Can you find something that is as long as your hand? What is it? Can you find the longest item in your house? What is it? Can you find an item that is longer than your hand, but shorter than the longest item in your house? What is it?

Now, can you draw those items?

Next, we are going to measure the items using your hand. You will need to lay your hand next to the item to measure it. The shortest item should be 1 hand. How long are the others? To measure items that are more than one hand, you will have to put your hands one after the other. Make sure your fingertips touch the bottom of the palm of the second hand. Once you have measured an item, write how many hands long it is on your sheet. You may need the number formation rhyme sheet to help you.

Look at your drawing and at the number you have written next to each item. Which item was the longest? How do you know? Which item was the shortest? How do you know?

What other ways could we measure the length of an item?

Morning Play and Learn

Did you remember to put your superhero costume on today? Your first mission has come in.

A lady is stuck on the bank of a river. You are at the other side of the river. The river is full of crocodiles. You have 2 stones (cushions). You need to use your cushions to cross the river. You cannot touch the river otherwise the crocodiles will gobble you up. You need to think about the best way to use the stepping stones. (Use two cushions to cross from one side of the room to the other). Can you complete this mission? Stay safe and report back when you have saved the lady.

Yesterday, we learnt a new digraph, ‘er’. Can you write the digraph ‘er? Watch the video to learn more.

Can you write the words to match the picture. Each word will have the new ‘er’ digraph in it.

=.This pencil is………….than the other pencil

. A……………of cows

All of these plants are………..

Next, can you write a sentence for two of the words you have written?

English/ Communication and Language –

What is a Superhero? What does a superhero need to do to be a super hero? Can you write a list of 3 rules that we need to follow? This will keep you focused on how to be a good superhero. My first two rules would be,

1.    A Superhero must be kind.

2.    A Superhero must try to be helpful.

Write 3 rules using your phonics to spell words. Think about the letter formation. Remember to start your sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop. Read your rules back to yourself when you have finished to make sure they make sense.

I look forward to reading your rules.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Superheroes, another mission has come in. You will need your sense of smell for this one. You will need to practice your sense of smell before you depart for your mission. You will need a scarf or a blindfold, a dish of lemon, a dish of tomato sauce, a dish of tuna, a dish of vinegar and a dish of cheese. You can swap any of the items but make sure it is a smelly item. You could even ask your side kick to surprise you with what is in the dish. This will make the task even harder. You will need your side kick to help you. Put the blind fold on. Take it in turns to sniff each dish. What do you think is in each dish? Can your nose smell each dish correctly? If it can then you are ready for the ‘Mr Stinky mission’. If not, then keep practising.

Mr Stink has escaped from our secret hide out. He is a very dangerous mouse. Can you find him and catch him? I wonder if it was Mr Stink making holes in Mrs Butler’s food…

Have you watched the other videos on the blog page titles ‘The mystery of the Hole’?

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and ask a grown up to read you a story.

Monday 11th May – Home Schooling

Start of the day –

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

This week we are going to be thinking about length. I have chosen to read the story ‘Superworm’ written by Julia Donaldson. Why do you think I have chosen to read this story? Watch the video below (It is also downloaded on the Story Page of the blog).

In the story it says the Superworm is super long. What does long mean? Is it a word we use to describe length? What other words can we use to describe length? If something was not as long as Superworm, what word would we use?

Can you get out some playdough for the next activity? If you do not have any playdough, can you make some playdough using the instructions in your home learning pack?

Make a worm using your playdough. You will need to roll it so you have a thin wiggly worm. Think about how we make a sausage in Dough Disco.

Next, can you make a worm that is shorter? How, do you know that it is shorter?

Now, can you make a worm that is longer? How do you know that it is longer?

Can you make another worm? How many worms do you have now? Which one is the longest? Shortest? Which ones are longer than the first worm you made? Which ones are shorter than the first worm you made?

Can you use cubes/blocks to explain and prove which worms are longer and shorter?

Think about the words you use to describe length. Have you said these words short, shorter, shortest, long, longer and longest?

Morning Play and Learn

PSSSTT Have you seen the other pages on this blog. Go and check out the page on ‘Our 10 little Caterpillars’, ‘Stories’, and ‘The Mystery of the Hole’.

To do this activity you will need crayons and paper. You are going to go on a texture hunt. Texture is how something feels. It could be smooth, rough, fuzzy, bumpy. I would like you to find a tree. Can you feel the bark on the trunk? How does it feel? Can you use some words to describe the texture? Next, put your paper onto the trunk, and rub the crayon length ways across the paper. You do not need to push hard. You will notice that a pattern is appearing on the paper. The paper is created by the texture of the bark on the trunk. Can you find other things with interesting textures that will print a pattern? You could try bricks, shells, weaved patio furniture. Try to find at least 5 different textures to rub onto your paper. You could use a different coloured crayon for each texture you find.

English/ Communication and Language –

I have a secret to share with you. It is very important that you do not share my secret. Watch the video if you promise not to share my secret, especially to the baddies.

So now you know my secret. I hope that you join my mission. You need to start by making your own costume. You could design your costume on the template below first. Then you can gather things from your house to make your own costume. Send me a photo of you wearing the costume with your superhero name. This is how I will recognise you during our missions. Be ready for the first mission tomorrow.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Now that you have joined my Superhero, you need to take extra care to keep healthy and well. You need to eat lots of healthy foods. This afternoon, you could make a smoothie. I drink smoothies every day to keep me healthy and strong. I like strawberry and banana smoothie. What smoothie are you going to make?

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and ask a grown up to read you a story.

Start of the day –

What is the month of the year? Sing our month of the year song. Do jazz hands for this month.

What day was it yesterday? What day of the week is it today? What day will it be tomorrow? Sing our days of the week song. Do jazz hands for today.

What is the weather today?

It was the 6th day of the month yesterday. I wonder if you know what the date it is today. How do you know?

Maths –

Youtube video – count and move song– count to 20 and march. Use a number line to help if you need to.

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=count+and+move&view=detail&mid=65D292696ED67F08BC7665D292696ED67F08BC76&FORM=VIRE

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Option 1 – In life, we use scales for lots of things. We measure how much we weigh, how much a parcel or letter weighs, and most excitingly we use scales for baking and cooking. Using your balancing scales, can you make biscuits? You will need to put the spoons on one side and then the ingredient in the other until the scales show that it balances. This is really good practice of balancing things and using scales. I would love it if you used some of our new words such as heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest.

Option 2 –

Let’s see how much you know about weight after this week. You will need water, a bucket and an elastic band or hair bobble. Attach the band to the handle of the bucket. Add one cup of water. What has happened? Add another cup of water? What has happened? Keep adding cups of water. What is happening to the band? Why? Can you use words to describe weight? What happens if I remove some water? Why does that happen? Explain and prove your answers.

Morning Play and Learn

Option 1 – Can you sing ’10 little teddies in a bed’. You could put 10 teddies in your bed and take one out each time you sing one less in the song

.

Option 2 – Number bond to 10 game. You will need 2 sets of numbers 1-9 on pieces of paper or cards. Each number goes on one piece of card or paper. You will need two players. Turn over the card so you can’t see the numbers. Take it in turns to turn over two cards. If the cards add up to 10 then you can keep the pair. If not, then turn them over and try to remember what is hidden on each card. This may help you next time you turn over a card. You may want to use a number line to help you remember the number bonds to 10.

Yesterday, we learnt the new trigraph ‘ure’. Today we are going to write ‘ure’. Watch the video for guidance (I apologies the video is topsy turvy. Can you watch it on a phone or tablet so you can turn it and see it the correct way? I am sorry. Mrs Taylor is still learning. If you can help then please send me an email). You will need the list below for the activity.

c + ure

p + ure

man + ure

cult + ure

furnit + ure

mat + ure

Add sound buttons if that helps you read the word after you have written it.

English/ Communication and Language –

Continue with your fact file. You can choose what you would like your second page to be about. I suggest ‘What makes my animal special?’ You could research and share an interesting fact.

When you have finished your fact file. Look through your work. Can you read it? Be a reflective learning, can you make it any better? Could you add colour to your fact file?

Caterpillars

Yesterday, I received the caterpillars. We have 10 caterpillars. They all look healthy and are very small. I have put a sock around them to keep them warm. I wonder what colours they are going to be when they turn into a butterfly? What should we call them?

I have set up another page on the blog to keep you updated with the caterpillars growth. It will take about 3 weeks for them to turn into butterflies. We have to get them all fat and full and then they will start to make their cocoon. Click on 10 Little Caterpillars at the top of the blog page to take you to the caterpillar diary.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Option 1 – If you made biscuits this morning, you could decorate them.

Option 2 – Play ‘I went to the shops’. It’s a good memory game and helps you with initial sounds in words. You have to play this with at least one other person. You take it in turns to say ‘’I went to the shops and I bought…’ Then you list an item but it has to start with the order of the alphabet. You could use an alphabet list written down to help you. The game is even harder than that, you have to remember every item that was bought. For example

Mrs Butler – I went to the shop and I bought an Apple.

Mrs Taylor – I went to the shop and I bought an Apple and a Banana.

Mrs Butler – I went to the shop and I bought an Apple, a Banana and a Cake.

Mrs Taylor – I went to the shop and I bought Apple, Banana, Cake and a Doughnut.

Mrs Butler – I went to the shop and I bought Apple, Banana, Cake, Doughnut and an Egg.

Mrs Taylor – I went to the shop and I bought Apple, Banana, Cake, Doughnut, Egg and Flour.

Try to get all the way to Z at the end of the alphabet,

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and ask a grown up to read you a story.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the activities for VE Day tomorrow. I will put the activities on the blog this afternoon.

If you have time, you may wish to make some dog biscuits.

Below is a recipe for Dog biscuits. You could make the biscuits for your dog if you have one, or you could drop them safely outside a Dog owners house. I am sure any dog would love a yummy treat.

300g Plain wholemeal flour

1tsp salt

1 egg

1 stock cube

150ml hot water.

  • Preheat oven to 170 degrees.
  • Dissolve stock cube in water.

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Using your balancing scales that you made yesterday, could you play post offices? You could pick some objects and wrap them in paper. Pretend they are parcels. Do you recognise any 3D shapes? Once you have items wrapped up, you will need some 1p coins or some cubes. Put the parcel on one side of the balancing scale. How many 1p coins or cubes does it take to balance the scales? Record the amount on paper. That is how much you are going to charge to send the parcel from your post office. You could do the same for Letters. I know a lot of you are writing letters to each other. How much is it to send the letter you wrote to your friend?

Challenge – You could change the 1pence coins into larger coins e.g. 5 x 1p is the same as 1 x 5p coin.

Morning Play and Learn

Play last man standing. You need to get all your family members together. You could play this game at lunch around the table. The aim is not to say 20. You have to go round in a circle saying one, two or three numbers. You need to say the numbers in order from 1-20. If you land on 20 then you lose. You can repeat the game. You can even add actions for other numbers such as stand up on number 14 instead of saying 14. It depends how good you are at the game.

Here is an example

Mrs Taylor – 1,2,3

Mrs Butler- 4,5

Mrs Taylor – 6

Mrs Butler- 7,8,9

Mrs Taylor – 10,11,12

Mrs Butler- 13,14,15

Mrs Taylor – 16,17,

Mrs Butler- 18,19

Mrs Taylor – 20

Mrs Taylor loses!

Today, we are going to learn another trigraph. This trigraph is ‘ure’. Watch the video to learn more. Once you have watched the video, read the words written in manure. All the words have our new sound ‘ure’ in them.

English/ Communication and Language –

Continue with your fact file. You can choose what you would like your first page to be about. I suggest ‘What does a …..look like?’ or ‘ What does a….eat and drink?’ If you don’t know, then how can you find out? Think about all the different ways we have learnt to research things that we don’t know.

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Use the photo for guidance. You will need coloured paper and straws. Cut the paper up into small pieces. Suck up the paper using the straw and put it into the correct coloured bowl. You could extend the activity, and add pictures that need to be sounded out and put into the matching bowl labelled with a digraph e.g. coin into the ‘oi’. Alternatively, you could have number sentences on the paper and the bowls can be labelled with a number. The child needs to work out the number sentence and put it into the correct bowl. Remember to do it with a straw.

End of the Home School Day –

Pretend to be a rocket and count down from 10. Challenge – Can you count backwards from 20?

Yesterday, we thought about weight. We used words to describe weight such as light, lighter. Lightest, heavy, heavier and heaviest. We also learnt that to measure weight, we could use a balancing scale. We were human balancing scales. Today, you are going to make a scale using things in your house. You will then use it through the week to balance items. You will need two paper cups or 2 small buckets (something you can attach string to the top), string, a coat hanger and some scissors. First hang the coat hanger on a cupboard handle or hook. Then attach two pieces of string onto each side of the coat hanger. There should be 4 pieces of string all together. Each piece should be the same length. You may need a grown up to tie the strings onto the hanger. Then at the bottom of the string, attach the cup or container that you have. One container should go onto each side. If you have a cup, then you will need a grown up to use scissors to make two opposite holes at the top of the cup. You can then thread the string through the hole. Please use the pictures for guidance.

Once you have made your scales, you can weigh items in your house. Your scales are not very strong so don’t weigh things that are too heavy. Here are a few things you could weigh.

A spoon

A toothbrush

A piece of fruit

A vegetable

A pair of glasses

A pebble from the garden

A miniature toy

A building block

Which item is heavy? Light? The heaviest? The lightest? Compare the items. Which one is lighter? Heavier? How do you know?

Can you use the words to describe weight confidently?

CHALLENGE 1 – ”The largest item is the heaviest item. True or False?”

CHALLENGE 2 – Can you compare 3 or more items by weight. Put the items in order of weight.

Morning Play and Learn

Pick an item and put it in the middle of a room or garden. Take it in turns with members of your family to roll a ball near it. The aim is to get the closest. Put a marker where the ball rolled to before the next person removes the ball and has their turn. Who rolled the ball the furthest away? The nearest? You could make a score sheet. You could order the scores depending on who got the nearest. The person who rolled nearest gets a 1. The second nearest is a 2 and so on. This game practises your ordinal numbers, your number writing, your hand eye co-ordination and your vocabulary associated with preposition and area. Have fun learning.

English/ Communication and Language –

This week we are thinking about our pet or favourite animal. I wonder if you could write your own fact file about the animal you chose. A fact file is like a non-fiction book. Can you remember what a non-fiction book is? It is an information book that tells us facts. This week we are going to develop our fact files, but today we are going to start with the front cover and the contents page. Can you remember what a contents page is? It is a list of all the things that are going to be shared in the book. Please use the photos for guidance. So grab some paper and fold it in half so it’s like a book. Draw the animal of your choice on the front with the title. Then turn the page and inside start your contents page. Write page 1 and then write what you would like to write about tomorrow. For example,

Horses

Contents

1.    What do they look like?

You do not need to write the other page names because you may change your mind on what you would like to write about. Use your phonics to sound out the words. You are superstars and can sound the words out by yourselves. Grown-ups are there just to keep you on track.

I am excited to read all your fact files. I know they are going to be very interesting.

NEWS FLASH

STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING. MRS BUTLER NEEDS HELP!!! WATCH THE VIDEO AND GET THINKING….

Afternoon Play and Learn –

Challenge – Can you find out what your animals name is in Spanish? When you go into year 1, you will be learning some Spanish. It would be amazing if you knew a word before you even started.

End of the Home School Day –

Tidy up all your play and learn mess. Have a chill and ask a grown up to read you a story.
